Ethereum’s much awaited Ethereum 2.0 rollout has formally started today after the beginning of initial pre-release for phase zero. This is the first release in a series of weekly pre-releases that will go on throughout February, and with beginning of this phase Ethereum has entered the third (Metropolis) stage of its transformation.

The news of pre-release was first shared by Ethereum Foundation on their official Github channel. Here’s what they said:

“This marks the first release in a series of weekly releases through February 2019. Phase 0 in v0.1 is relatively feature complete and approaching stable.”

Ethereum 2.0, also known as Serenity, will be the final upgrade of Ethereum network in which the whole network will be transitioned to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) based consensus algorithm from existing Proof-of-Work (PoW). The upgrade is expected to bring dramatic improvements to the scale and speed of Ethereum network, which is the reason behind all excitement that we see. In the current stage of transition to Serenity two system-wide hard forks are to be done, namely Byzantium and Constantinople. Among both these hard forks Constantinople has constantly been in the news, and it would also have been done if some vulnerabilities were not discovered right before its scheduled activation back in January. Now the fork is scheduled to happen towards the end of this month.

Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin also commented on the pre-release of Serenity. Responding to a question regarding how complete this pre-release is he said that it is “*baaasically* feature complete for Casper.” In case you don’t know, Casper FFG is the name given to consensus algorithm to which Ethereum will be shifted post completion of Ethereum 2.0 upgrade. It was first published back in October 2017.

Gorli testnet also goes live

Besides this Serenity pre-release one more thing also went live yesterday to set the testing grounds for Ethereum 2.0. Gorli testnet – a testnet developed to conduct the trial of Prysm sharding client for Ethereum 2.0 – also went live. A testnet environment allows developers to try out smart contracts and other new features before rolling them out over mainnet. Since it works as a test environment, it doesn’t involve any transaction fees (gas). Gorli will therefore be instrumental in the transformative roadmap of Ethereum 2.0

Now when weekly pre-releases have started to happen, every week there will be a new one throughout this month. We’ll keep an eye on each of them and will continue to let you know how did they go, so keep checking our updates.
