So far we have seen a lot of real life use-case for the blockchain technology. However, Andhra Pradesh has taken the pioneer step of proposing to store residents’ DNA on the blockchain technology.
Some sources say that up to 2 billion genomes will be sequenced by 2025. However, to prevent this information from falling into wrong hands, the Andhra Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Project Shivom to ensure the same.
On the occasion, J A Chowdary, IT Advisor to Chief Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh said, “Our partnership with Shivom explores the possibilities of providing an efficient way of diagnostic services to patients of Andhra Pradesh by maintaining the privacy of the individual data through blockchain technologies.”
Shivom’s co-founder and CEO, Dr. Axel Schumacher said, “Whilst diversity is all around us in the physical world, it is still lacking in the existing genomic data available to researchers around the world. This results in exclusion, as minority and under-represented groups miss out on the benefits from advances in predictive and personalized medicine because abnormal genomic variations that exist in their ethnic or geographical location will not be present in the data that researchers are working with.”
Elaborating on what Shivom and Andhra Pradesh government are planning to do, Gourish Singla, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shivom told Crypto-News India, “We are excited to be able to run a pilot project with the Andhra Pradesh government, where genomic data will be stored on the blockchain and secured by cryptographic keys. As part of this partnership we will also be setting up in Fintech Valley Vizag. The AP government is looking for decentralized solutions for genomic and healthcare data storage, and we’re glad to be able to offer it to them. Individuals will be able to own their data and will have power to donate and share it for incentives should they choose to do so.”
He added that currently they are having their token sale and will be launching a beta product in June.
